jordan has achieved a new environmental milestone by advancing 23 positions in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), published by Yale University, ranking 54th globally out of 177 countries, compared with 77th place in the 2024 report. This achievement reflects the Kingdom's continued progress in environmental protection and sustainability
This advancement is the result of national efforts led by the Ministry of Environment, in partnership with various ministries and national institutions, and with the support of international partners, to implement the objectives of the Economic Modernization Vision, particularly the Sustainable Environment pillar. This pillar focuses on improving environmental quality, ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources, strengthening climate action, and accelerating the transition toward a green economy, thereby enhancing quality of life and boosting Jordan's competitiveness at both the regional and international levels
The Environmental Performance Index is based on three main components: Ecosystem Vitality, Climate Action, and Environmental Health and Air Pollution Reduction. It is considered one of the world's leading indicators for assessing countries' performance in achieving sustainability goals and the effectiveness of environmental policies
According to the report, Jordan ranked 54th globally in the overall index, moving up 23 places compared with the 2024 edition. The Kingdom ranked 108th globally in the Ecosystem Vitality component, 54th globally in Climate Action, advancing 20 places from the previous report, and achieved its strongest performance in Environmental Health and Air Pollution Reduction, ranking 49th globally, an improvement of 29 places
Minister of Environment Dr. Ayman Suleiman stated that this progress reflects the effectiveness of the government's environmental policies and reforms, as well as the significant achievements made in implementing national programs related to climate action, sustainable natural resource management, air quality improvement, and strengthening environmental governance. These efforts are aligned with the objectives of the Economic Modernization Vision and Jordan's national and international commitments
Dr. Suleiman noted that the Environmental Performance Index is one of the priority international indicators that the Ministry continuously monitors and seeks to improve as part of the Economic Modernization Vision's performance framework. He emphasized that the index serves as a globally recognized benchmark for measuring countries' environmental performance and reflects the impact of national policies on sustainable development and Jordan's standing at both the regional and international levels
He further stressed that this achievement demonstrates Jordan's commitment to advancing the Economic Modernization Vision and positioning the environment as a key driver of sustainable development. He emphasized that investment in the environment has become a fundamental pillar for promoting economic growth, attracting investment, improving quality of life, and strengthening the Kingdom's resilience to environmental and climate challenges
Dr. Suleiman also expressed his appreciation to all national and international partners—including ministries, government institutions, international organizations, and supporting entities—for their cooperation and contributions to this achievement. He affirmed that Jordan's progress reflects the success of a collaborative, integrated approach among all stakeholders and that the Ministry will continue working with its partners to further strengthen the country's environmental performance and achieve even greater progress in global environmental indices, reinforcing Jordan's position as a regional model in environmental action and sustainable development
